Moonblaze Wicks - by Vicky

If you've ever made cathedrals you must know how much of a pain it is to drill through kevlar *shudders* in this design you weave the wicking around the bolt, which is not only easier but holds it's shape well and even looks kinda pretty.

What you will need:

  • a working pair of hands
  • some good tunes
  • Kevlar - 1" wide (2.5 cm) and 2mm thick (each poi head took 14ft or 5m of the thin stuff)
  • scissors
  • eye bolts - your preference for size, mine are 3'' (7.5cm) long
  • nuts (locknuts, if you don't want them exposed on the bottom) you could also use cotter pins instead
  • washers, at least 2 per poi head (if you want some extra weight you can stick a few washers in the middle)
  • kevlar thread
  • needle

What to do:

  1. Cut the wicking. You need two pieces of equal lengths, roughly 6.5ft (2m) per head (but a little extra won't hurt)
  2. Find the middle of both pieces, make a hole big enough to fit the eye bolt.
  3. Don't forget to put on the washers first!!! Put the bolts through the holes and start with two strands of kevlar perpendicular to each other.
  4. Here comes the fun! So the idea is that 4 pieces overlap one over another. start by bending the first one

Get your stuff .
Find the middle of the two pieces.

The next one goes over.
And the one after that.
The last one goes through the loop.

Now tighten everything.
Repeat steps 2-7, tightening as you go.
For extra weight add washers.

Finished unless using locknuts.
If locknuts are used cover with layers.
Then sew the bottom edges.

If you are using regular nuts, use a smaller washer on the bottom and leave the end of the bolt exposed. If you hide it you won't be able to tighten it every once in a while and it will eventually unscrew. You will then have to remake your wicks. It happened to me... no fun. So cut off the extra kevlar at this point, you might also want to sew around the bottom to make sure everything stays in place.
