How to make Fire Chains

You know those twisted link choke chains you can get for dogs? Well, if you get the right size, they make excellent firechains. The right size in my opinion is 2.5mm, this is the width of the metal bar used to make the links. You can get good stuff and bad stuff but the strength can be relied upon completely.

So.. to make your own fire chains you will need:

  • 2 X 2.5mm curb link choke chains (length is upto you.)
  • 2 meters of 65mm wick.
  • 2 X connectors.
  • 1 meter of minimum 20mm nylon strap/webbing.

The round attachment point for the handle is better than most shop bought ones too. It doesn't warp the nylon in your handles like a D-ring ends up doing. The chains will take pretty much any fire head. They are straightforward, strong and user friendly fire chains. You can put any head you want on there and off you go, fire spinning goodness.

Making the chains

Pretty simple stuff really, it depends on which kind of handle you want. If you want a single loop then there is no need for any instruction from me, just loop it through one of the rings and sew it. If you want a double finger loop which imo is a little bit safer, follow the instructions below.

Take a length of your nylon strapping by both ends and fold them into the middle like below : Get your sewing kit out and start stitching your handle together. OVER DO this!! This is the weakest point of your chains no matter how well it is done. Once you have done that pop your connector onto the other end and it's ready to go.. one shiny new fire chain, ready for action.

cut ends are on the inside
fold once more to get this
slip the chain through
ta-daaa!!
It's just too easy isn't it ? It gets even easier if you use ball chain, if you do use ball chain however make sure you get strong stuff. You should also check your equipment for wear and tear periodically, this design of chains is pretty much fool proof but the stitching in the handles will die eventually. They could be improved upon of course, by the addition of swivels (not totally necessary but nice all the same) or by using a larger grade chain with bigger links so you can fit the connector into the chain rather than the ring for aesthetic purposes. When you are done however you will need to make your self some fire heads : More wick making tutorials forthcoming. Do you make your own wicks ? Do you own a digital camera ?
